Ask better, don't guess
This page won't pick a present for you. It shows what a wish nobody could guess looks like, and what to check before you buy. 102 things for hobbies and jobs — our own selection. Use it to ask someone the right question, or to write your own list so nobody has to ask twice.
What a wish nobody could guess looks like
None of these come to mind on their own — you can only ask, or read them in a list. That is why «a watch» from a gift guide and «a running watch» from the person themselves are two different presents.
Don't guess — ask
Someone with a hobby knows exactly which small thing they are missing, and almost never buys it for themselves. Asking «tell me what you need» spares them a polite «thank you» for something useless. You send it yourself, from your own chat — we never message anyone.
How to ask for a gift idea more precisely
- 01
Find their hobby below
Coffee, sport, the workshop, music, makeup — twelve groups in all.
- 02
Look at what to check
Size, standard, model, shade — without it, it is easy to buy the wrong one.
- 03
Ask them
Use the ready-made message above: they add a couple of items, you pick one.
- 04
Or write your own list the same way
Model, size, where to buy — so nobody has to ask twice.
How to read this selection
This is not a «top gifts» list, and not an export of anyone's wish list.
We gathered 102 things that people with hobbies and jobs keep buying for themselves and almost never get as presents — too specific to guess. Each comes with the detail you need to check. That detail is the difference between «a watch» and «a running watch», and between a polite «thanks» and «how did you know?».
Use it in one of two ways. If you are giving, find the person's hobby and ask them with a link. If you are writing your own list, write items the same way: with the model, the size and where to buy.

How to ask so that they answer
- 1
Ask from yourself, with limits. «I don't want to guess — add a couple of ideas by Friday, up to $40.» Without limits people either feel awkward or ask for the impossible.
- 2
Ask about the hobby, not the gift. «What are you missing for the bike?» gets an answer. «What do you want?» gets «nothing, really».
- 3
Ask for the model or size. One line — «Shimano cassette tool» — saves you an hour in the shop and a return.
- 4
Don't ask the day before. Two weeks gives them time to think and you time to order.
- 5
Mark what you are taking. If several people see the list, marking «I'll give this» prevents two identical presents. The owner never sees it.
Common questions
The list is free — both for the person collecting it and for everyone it is sent to.
Are these real people's wishes?
No, this is our own selection: things that are hard to guess, each with what to check. Real wishes are in the lists people send themselves — you can ask for one with the ready-made message on this page.
What do I give someone who says they need nothing?
Ask about their hobby, not about a present: «what are you missing for your coffee setup?» almost always gets an answer. «I need nothing» usually means «I feel awkward asking», not «I have everything».
Can I buy something from here without asking?
Only if you already know the detail on the right: size, standard, model. Without it, asking is quicker — it takes one message.
How do I write my own list like this?
Put the model, size or shade right in the item, and a link or shop in the «where to buy» field. Five items at different prices are enough for the link to work.
How much does it cost?
Nothing — for the person making the list and for everyone they send it to.
Start a list
Five lines, a link in the chat — and «what do you want?» is answered until the next occasion. The address is permanent; keep adding to it.
